We grieve for our friends in Norway
As you may know, we have been deeply involved with the Norwegian people since 1986. I have personally traveled to many parts of Norway and know hundreds of Christian leaders from the various churches. Some of my best memories as a Christian and as a person occurred there and some of my warmest, closest friends are Norwegians. I have spoken with Jens-Petter and will continue to be in touch with him and others through this difficult time.
It is beyond belief that such an evil thing would happen in that country of such beautiful natural and human resources. Unlike the USA, I have known only one Norwegian to own a gun, let alone use one in anger. Even hunting is largely hidden from view so the fact that a man so completely Norwegian in every way did these killings is beyond belief. This is not to say that Norwegians are all above sin. They too are human and need the healing, redeeming effects of Christ. But the culture there has been largely pacifistic in tone for decades, largely because of their attempts to implement the teachings of Jesus in society.
The outpouring of love, sympathy and prayers throughout Norway and especially in its churches is remarkable. The total population of Norway is less than five million people yet some 200,000 have gathered at the downtown Domkirke (Cathedral) in Oslo where I have visited many times. They are gathering in church buildings all over the nation burning candles, leaving flowers, praying for the families of the dead and holding each other close to soften the unbearable grief.
This amazing collective of good grief will help the families and the nation release their anger and pain over time. Yet, the survivors will require help to renew their minds and ongoing grief work for years to come. I can only imagine how difficult it is and shall be for the youth who survived the horror at the camp but lost friends. Thankfully there are hundreds of Christian Ministers, Youth Leaders and Lay Persons who understand how to listen, pray and come alongside those whose trauma will never fully subside, but who can find some rest through God’s love.
But nothing can erase the pain and losses fully. So, join me as I pray for God to shower the entire nation of Norway with His mercy and grace. May the Norwegian people allow God’s Spirit to minister personally to them and comfort them with His presence.
With deep love,
Gary Sweeten
